It lasted from 1979 until 1982 and was played as a "winter" league, held between the end of the regular basketball season and the beginning of spring basketball season. The league was officially sanctioned by the ABA in 1979 as the "Pacific Coast Basketball Association", prior to the start of its first season. It was renamed the "Pacific Coast Basketball Association" in 1980. At the time, the league had eight teams, with the Boston Beermen, then in the league's only year in the ABA, the oldest active team, being the franchise's only member. The league was changed to the "Coast Basketball League" in 1981, the same year it was added to the ABA TV schedule. The league continued to be controlled by the ABA, with the league's decision to merge the league's first season into the regular season in 1982, which was being conducted in the same city, thus effectively ending the season before the beginning of regular basketball season. The league did not continue after its final season. The league faced several problems during its run, one of which was the state of basketball in the United States, as the 1979–80 NBA season was canceled when an NBA lockout started, and the 1980–81 season ended with the resignation of the league's commissioner, the ABA's Mark Stenmark. The league also had difficulty finding local TV markets, as the ABA was declining in popularity, while the NBA was on the rise, causing several teams to move to the Pacific Northwest. Member cities 1979 Boston Beermen (Boston, MA) California A's (Oakland, CA) California Wings (Sacramento, CA) Los Angeles Amigos (Los Angeles, CA) Mt. Hood Brakettes (Bend, OR) Portland Pioneers (Portland, OR)
